Para red detection

Para Red (1 - ((p-nitrophenyl) azo) - 2-naphthol, c16h11n3o3) is an azo dye, which is usually used in textile dyeing and biological experiments.

The structure of para red is similar to Sudan No.1, but a nitro group is added to the para phenylazo group. The main dyeing principle and toxicity of para red are similar to Sudan No.1. Para red is one of a series of monoazo acid dyes discovered in 1870s. It can dye the cellulose of textile fabric into bright red, but it is not strong enough.

In the UK, it has been banned from food since 1995. On April 15, 2005, the British Food Standards Agency (FSA) issued a warning that the old El Paso spicy Mexican dishes and tortillas produced by general mills in the United States contained para red dye, reminding consumers of the potential risk of cancer.
